Please consider what is written here a wake-up call for all of chiropractic.
You know, a lot of people typically start with a quote, or a question, or a statistic. Something that captivates your attention. Something that pulls on your heart strings.
I can tell you everything you already know about chiropractic. I could quote a green book or Sid Williams, Fred Barge, BJ Palmer. I could give you CDC, and W.H.O. statistics about how people and society is sick and dying. But I’m not here to tell you what you already know, especially as a chiropractor or a chiropractic student. I’m not interested in that.
But what I am interested in, is that you are reading this right now, at this very moment. We all chose to go to chiropractic school and we all had or have the dream of practicing in this field and healing this world from the inside out. I’m more interested in the fact that we are all here, with that goal and mission in some way, shape, or form. So all statistics, all quotes, all differences in philosophy, beliefs, and lifestyles aside, remember why you are here. Remember chiropractic has not only changed our lives for the better, but it can change millions of lives for the better if we stick together and we do things for one another and with one another in mind.
As I reflect on the past 10 quarters as a chiropractic student, I want to share something that is near and dear to my heart that I have experienced thus far along my chiropractic journey—keeping chiropractic in motion. We need the support, we need the help, and we need to stop fighting internally. We need to start helping one another, growing with one another, and striving to achieve success… together. If we truly believe that the power that made the body heals the body, and that all healing happens from above down inside out, we should probably start there as a chiropractic profession; don’t you think? Let’s start inside, looking internally right?! That starts with you, and me, and all of our colleagues. Then, chiropractic will have a more positive light shed on it by the public. We can move forward with this profession instead of eating away at each other on Facebook, biting each others heads off through comments, passive aggressive posts, and through computer screens. It starts with us, ladies and gentlemen. It starts here, tonight.
Chiropractic changed my life, but that’s not what I’m here to talk about — not now. It is much bigger than that. Because if you affect one person we believe in this thing called a ripple effect, we believe in this one thing called momentum. And momentum is motion.
Without motion, comes stagnation, without motion in chiropractic we become stagnant, static, complacent. And we start misunderstanding the Big Idea behind chiropractic and what it truly is and what it truly can be. I want you to know that we are on the same team. And we need to keep chiropractic in motion. Because motion is exactly what we look to restore as chiropractors.
If we allow inter-chiropractic fights, if we allow chiropractors to bully other chiropractors, do you understand that energy between us, in chiropractic, creates an external force being applied to our motion. It’s the petty arguments, debates, and philosophical disagreements that make us become stagnant and moves our profession further away from the public eye. It makes our message not loud enough to get out. It discourages the public from seeing a chiropractor, and it is not the public's fault. The public only sees one thing, the public only sees what we allow them to see. They should only see what we are putting out into the world as to what chiropractic is and how it can help them.
Let me remind you of what Newton says. An object in motion will remain in motion until acted on by an external force… The object here being chiropractic, the motion, being us right now carrying 124 years of chiropractic momentum to get to that tipping point, to get chiropractic to the public so that they understand what we do, who we are, and how we do it. Because let me tell you something, the public needs chiropractors more than ever in today's day and age, no matter if you believe it or not. Moms and dads and families in general are seeking chiropractic and alternative healthcare FIRST, nowadays, more than ever before.
So if we continue to create this internal negative energy, what is that doing to chiropractic? It is working against chiropractic’s motion and momentum towards a positive mindset, outlook, and perception by the public, and we become stagnant. We start going the opposite direction, and we don’t get anywhere. It moves us towards the road of sickness and disease as it refers to the entire chiropractic profession. Doing the exact opposite of what we attempt to do for others—restore and maintain motion in a direction of health and well being.
Now, I understand that there needs to be challenges and intense conversations in the profession. However, it is typically a disagreement between techniques, a disagreement in analysis of the spine, or a disagreement in philosophy. STOP arguing with those in the profession you simply don’t align with. It is petty and only adds to our internal negative energy that slows down chiropractic’s momentum.
So don’t fight within your own profession. Be the chiropractor your community deserves. Do what we do best without prescribing drugs or performing surgery. Know your worth. You make one adjustment on an individual, know that you are making a global impact. Our job as chiropractors is not small. As long as we stop internally feuding we will shift the public perception and we will maintain chiropractic’s motion today through tomorrow, and the next day.
We keep chiropractic in motion by working as a unit. Don’t allow for stagnation. Not you individually, and not as a profession. Hold each other accountable. Let the petty arguments, and the disagreements roll off your back—we have a world to save.
