When Luck and Hard Work Meet

We never know when that perfect opportunity will present itself. The dream job, the coveted internship… but are you prepared for when it does? Every dream come true begins with a dream. The first step in making our dreams a reality is to make them concrete. This week, we will delve into the world of making dreams a reality and being prepared for those once in a lifetime opportunities.

Why is it important to have goals, dreams, and aspirations in life? Because they give us something to work towards. They give us milestones to celebrate along our journey. Without goals in life, it can seem like we are just running in circles. We may not realize it in the moment, but when we take the time to put our goals on paper, we are taking the first step towards setting our plans in motion. We are giving ourselves something to focus on, a reminder of what our hard work will soon achieve.

I have two favorite ways of writing out my dreams - lists and vision boards.

  • I construct a dream list much as I would a shopping list, and the more detail the better. One can create a different list for every area in his or her life: professional goals, personal life, education, relationships, fun and games… any area in your life you want to improve, start a list of ways in which you want to improve it. I have found that making a list of 8 to 10 items, with an even mix of realistic, near future goals, and crazy, over the top 5 to 10 year goals, keeps me the most motivated.

  • Vision boards are an amazing way to maintain focus on making our dreams a reality. If we live our lives longing for the future, thinking “I will be happy when…” we will never be satisfied, constantly waiting for what is to come. Visualizing our dreams and being thankful for our current state helps us to live now as if we have already achieved our goals. It is important to recognize that our thoughts control and construct our future. One of my favorite quotes is by human behavioral specialist Dr. John Demartini, in which he states, “Whatever we think about and thank about we bring about.” What a powerful statement! We have the authority to bring anything we desire into our reality!

How will you start preparing for those rare opportunities as they begin to present themselves? My challenge for you this week is to think about what you want most in life and write it down! Give yourself a concrete goal to focus on and reward yourself for every step taken along the journey. If you have a beloved way of making your dreams come true, please share it with us! We are all here to learn from and grow with each other.

Until next time, enjoy the ride!
